“Reflections of Karaite Culture in Embroidery”

For many centuries living in Lithuania, Karaites have maintained their language, religion, customs and culture. One of the elements of the expression of culture and customs are the ornaments and embroidery used in the nation. Karaite folk art is characterized by geometric and floral ornaments. The artisan is happy to share her knowledge of Karaite history with everyone and proves that the ethnicity of a nation is closely linked to its folk art.

The purpose of the educational program

To introduce the unique Karaite culture, its origin and history. To introduce the craft of embroidery and teach the subtleties of embroidery.

Activities: During the education you will be briefly introduced to the history and customs of the Karaites, a small nation of Turkic origin nation that lives in Lithuania. You will learn about the ethnic identity of the Karaite people, which is very reflected in their traditional ornamentation used to decorate items, embroidering various household, festive and ritual items. You will learn geometric and floral ornaments of repetitive rhythm, various embroidery techniques, meanings of ornaments and colours typical to Karaite folk art. You will also be able to create your own ornaments based on the historical-ethnographic material provided.

Duration of education: 1 – 1,5 hours.

Number of participants: 10 – 30 persons.

Seasonality: All year round.

Languages: Lithuanian, Russian, Polish.
